What qualifications do I need to apply?

Applicants must have a four-year Bachelor’s degree in design or fine art (or equivalent). For entry criteria, see our steps to apply.

If I do not have a 4-year qualification in Art or Design, can I apply for the programme?

Unless an applicant can show significant industry experience in Entertainment Design and Concept Art in the film, television and game industry, all applicants must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Art or Design (or equivalent) with a strong portfolio of work.

What is a Master of Design?

A concentrated programme that involves a focused design research project that takes a challenging real-world design problem through to an innovative and well-resolved solution.

You have a full 12 months to focus on a single project to enable you to ‘master’ your project brief and deliver a well resolved solution.

Supervisors will jointly review students work throughout the duration of their project and help direct their learning and skills.

How much does this course cost?

In 2020, the fees are set at between $7,400.50 and $9,518.30 NZD for domestic (NZ and Australian citizens / permanent residents) and $35,750.00 for International full fee-paying students. These tuition rates are correct at time of writing but are subject to change.

Are there any scholarships available?

Massey University has a range of competitive scholarships for postgraduate to assist students while studying.

Am I able to work while studying?

The programme is full time and, therefore, students are expected to devote their time to the programme; however international student visas do allow students to work while studying in New Zealand.

Is this an online course?

No. This course takes place at Massey University and Weta Workshop in Wellington, New Zealand, and students are required to live in New Zealand throughout the length of the programme.
